When were trousers first worn?

Trousers are a clothing item worn from the waist to the ankles, covering both the legs separately. They entered the recorded history in the sixth century BC on various rock cravings. During that time, Iranian people, along with Americans and Asians are known to have worn trousers for the very first time. Wearing trousers became an everyday affair in Europe during the 8th century, and wearing them was often associated with high status.

It is also sometimes believed that sailors might have played a vital role in the worldwide dissemination of trousers as a fashion wear. During the 19th century, Wigan pit brow girls scandalized Victorian society by wearing trousers at work in the coal mines. They used to wear skirts over their trousers to enable smooth movement. In the western society, French designer Paul Poiret was the first one to design trousers for women. He created loose fitting, wide legged trousers that were based on the costumes of some popular Opera.

During the 20th century, air pilots and other working women were often found wearing trousers. During world war two, women who used to work in factories or were engaged in some kind of men’s work used to wear trousers, and later it became an acceptable casual wear for gardening, beach and other leisurely pursuits.

In the year 1919, Luisa Capetillo was the first woman to wear trousers in Puerto Rico, and was sent to jail for doing so. In 1960’s, Andre Courreges introduced long trousers, leading to the era of pantsuit and designer jeans. Later in 1969, Charlotte Reid became the first woman to wear trousers in US Congress.

Since then, trousers gained popularity with every passing year. In 2004, the International skating union allowed women to wear trousers instead of skirts for competition.

In 2014, an Indian family court ruled that a husband objecting to his wife wearing a kurta and jeans and forcing her to wear sari amounts to cruelty and could be a possible ground for seeking divorce.

A trouser basically has three parts, namely pleats, cuffs, support and flies. Pleats fall just below the waistband and are found quite often in many formal and casual trousers. Pleats could be one, two, three or even no pleats at all. In order to prevent fraying, trousers makers can finish the legs by hemming the bottom. A fly is basically a covering over an opening join concealing zipper, Velcro or buttons, used to join the opening. Today, most trousers are held up through the assistance of a belt which is passed on through the belt loops on the waistband of the trousers.
